LAVA architecten (LAboratorium Voor Architectuur) is a Leuven-based architecture practice working at the intersection of spatial research and built design. The studio develops what it describes as spatial yield: maximizing the social and functional value of existing spaces through reconversion, extension, and adaptive reuse. LAVA's practice spans residential extensions, educational buildings, cultural institutions, and public space, with a consistent emphasis on sustainable and circular design. Projects include the conversion of a water tower in Leuven, educational buildings for schools and universities across Flemish Brabant, and residential extensions. The studio operates an internal research arm it calls a living laboratory, developing tools, simulations, and workflows for each project. LAVA works with BIM, drone-based point clouds, and custom-built automation tools as part of its design process.
