Alltubes Bench

Bent aluminum tube seating from the Alltubes series by Belgian studio Muller Van Severen

Muller Van Severen's Alltubes Bench is part of a series built around a single repeated element: round aluminum tubes. The collection includes wall cabinets, a freestanding cabinet, a chair, and the bench, each using the same material in a way specific to its function. What reads as a constraint becomes a design generator, with the tube doing different formal work across different pieces.

In the cabinets, tubes are placed in close rhythmic repetition to form cabinet faces, their density creating a soft undulation across the surface. For the bench and chair, the approach shifts: the tubes are bent rather than arrayed, and the bending introduces a quality that straight aluminum resists. The material, which can feel cold and rigid in its flat-sheet or extruded forms, becomes tactile and approachable through the curve. The bend is doing structural and perceptual work at the same time.

The bench sits within Muller Van Severen's broader practice of finding expressive range within tight material parameters. Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen have worked extensively in aluminum, steel wire, marble, and enamel, consistently interested in objects that are structurally legible and formally direct. The Alltubes series extends that approach into a family of pieces that share a clear DNA without looking like multiples of the same idea.
