The Per.for.(h)ated Loveseat is the first piece in Will Choui's forthcoming Per.for.(h)ated collection, produced from perforated steel in an inverted pyramid form. The choice of perforated sheet rather than solid steel reduces the visual weight of the metal considerably: the material is present but not opaque, and light passes through it in a way that reads as transparency without actually being it. Choui cites brutalist architecture and the work of Shiro Kuramata as reference points for the piece.

The frame is upholstered in brown velvet, which introduces warmth and softness directly against the industrial steel. The material contrast is direct: the hardness and coolness of the perforated metal exterior, the softness and warmth of the velvet seat and back. The 2 materials are doing opposite things, and the loveseat's character comes from the tension between them rather than from either one alone.

All Choui's work is designed and manufactured in Canada. The Per.for.(h)ated collection extends this approach across further typologies, with the loveseat establishing the formal and material vocabulary the rest of the collection will develop.
