A Victorian De Beauvoir townhouse by Mosley Thorold, reorganized around a repositioned staircase, with 17th-century shutters and a dropped concrete kitchen.

De Beauvoir Townhouse is the renovation of a Victorian terraced house in Hackney, London, by Mosley Thorold Architects. The project's primary move was the staircase. In its previous position, the stair choked the entrance hall and broke the plan into disconnected rooms. Mosley Thorold removed an obstructive study and repositioned the stairwell within its footprint, opening a void that channels daylight into what had been the darkest part of the plan. A sightline now runs from the front door through a double-height sash window to the garden beyond, and the sequence down through the house opens progressively as you descend.

The transition downstairs unfolds through a series of spatial shifts: the double-height window, a top-lit corridor, then the lower ground extension. The kitchen, dining area, and reading nook are dropped 600 millimeters below the original floor level, which gains ceiling height, sharpens the zoning, and strengthens the connection to the garden. Wide glazed doors open fully to a lowered patio at the same level. Mosley Thorold designed a dining table with the client for the kitchen, intended to sit at the center of the household's daily life.

Historical materials are used deliberately throughout. 17th-century Italian shutters have been reworked as kitchen doors. 19th-century cement tiles return to the floor. Hand-selected bricks carry their previous life in the surface. These choices reflect a position on how buildings age rather than nostalgia: surfaces that accumulate history are worth living with over the long term, and the project required close collaboration with metalworkers, a kitchen maker, specialist joiners, and a stonemason to realize them properly.

Set against this warmth is board-marked concrete on the external kitchen facades. The technique is specific. The team sandblasted timber boards to raise their grain, then cast the concrete against them so the surface would register that relief in negative. The concrete was poured in a single continuous lift without junctions, requiring bespoke formwork and a steel column system engineered to bear the pressure of the pour independently of the party wall. As Nathaniel Mosley has noted, Victorian builders celebrated what materials could do, and this concrete detail carries that same ambition through contemporary means.
