East Bluff Residence

A 3,000 sq ft Newport Beach home layered with Italian marble, aged limestone, and vintage furniture selections

Studio Gutow's East Bluff Residence sits in Newport Beach, California, a 3,000-square-foot home designed for a surgeon who wanted her private life to operate at a different register than her professional one. The brief called for stillness and individuality in equal measure, and the studio responded with a material palette built around aged and natural surfaces rather than anything that reads as new.

Stone does the heaviest work throughout. Fior di Pesco Italian marble covers the kitchen countertops. Mexican tumbled limestone runs through key living areas, and a chocolate travertine fireplace anchors the main room. Pink lady quartzite lines the powder room. Aged limestone covers the floors. Cedar wraps the elevated ceilings, and abundant skylights and windows pull daylight deep into the plan. Custom Venetian plaster and walnut wood paneling appear in the communal zones, adding surface variation without introducing visual noise. The materials are chosen to age well and to carry a sense of weight that newer finishes resist.

The furniture selection draws heavily on vintage and antique sourcing, which is a consistent thread in Studio Gutow's practice. Arthur Umanoff bar stools, a Carlo Scarpa for Bernini dining set, a marble table from Obsolete, and a Lawson Fenning boucle chair provide the primary layer. A Willy Guhl planter and a Piet Kramer Art Deco cabinet appear in the living area. French mirrors and a repurposed church desk feature in the primary spaces. Persian wool rugs carry a consistent color palette across rooms, supplemented by Fortuny and alpaca pillows, mohair sofas, and headboards in cotton velvet and linen.

The sourcing strategy here is also practical. Vintage and antique pieces sidestep the extended lead times that have made specifying new furniture increasingly difficult. The result is a home that reads as assembled over time rather than installed at once, which is precisely what the brief required.
