Fold Hang is a chair by Atelier Fomenta, the Montreal studio formed by Julia Arvelo, Florence Barnabé, and Muriel Bentolila. The piece is built around textile used in 2 distinct ways simultaneously: as a structural plane and as a yielding cushion surface. At some points the textile is held taut and rigid; at others it folds and compresses under the body. The same material does different things depending on how it is positioned and loaded.
The result is a chair that occupies ambiguous functional territory. It can be used as a seat or as a low surface, and its textile character means it reads differently in different positions and from different angles. Atelier Fomenta describes the approach as one of economy of means: using a single material to do multiple structural and formal jobs rather than combining separate components for each function.
All Fomenta work is handmade in Montreal with local artisans, and the Fold Hang is consistent with the studio's interest in industrial and accessible materials applied with careful attention to how they behave in use. The piece was part of Atelier Fomenta's broader exhibition program across design fairs in Montreal and internationally.
