Residence MG is a home in Erpe-Mere, Belgium, designed by Pieter Vanrenterghem around a monochromatic palette of natural materials held in a greyscale range. The kitchen uses grey travertine against concrete walls and counters. The floors throughout are polished concrete. The challenge in a scheme built from a single tonal register is that the materials must remain distinct from each other while reading as a coherent whole, and the way each surface behaves under different light conditions becomes critical to whether that coherence holds.

Vanrenterghem's approach across his residential work is to compose natural materials so that they create tactile variation rather than visual complexity. In Residence MG, the texture of the travertine, the smoothness of the polished concrete, and the finish of the concrete walls each sit within the same grey spectrum while remaining perceptually different from each other. The shifts are most legible as light rakes across the surfaces, which is where the careful material matching the brief describes becomes the deciding factor in how the interior reads.
