Ercolina is a private estate across 2 hilltops in the Maremma of southern Tuscany, set within 30 hectares of olive groves near Magliano in Toscana and designed by McLean Quinlan as the practice's first project in Italy. Three new buildings, a tower, a barn, and a guest house, replace a farmhouse and scattered ruins and stand about 150 meters apart, placed for the topography, the breezes, and views toward the Orbetello lagoon and the Argentario peninsula.
The main residence occupies the footprint of a former chicken coop, which kept the mature olive trees around it. The tower's tall proportions and arched openings draw on the defensive walls and towers of nearby Magliano, and the walls are built from stone taken from the site, under shallow terracotta roofs with Italian tiles and windows. The barn supports olive oil production and also serves as an events space and private gym.
Interior concepts were developed by Tommaso Ziffer with Studio GAA Architects and later refined by a Spanish interior design studio. Antique furniture sits with frescoed doors and ceilings under timber beams, and tall arched windows frame the hills. The estate has 11 en-suite bedrooms, 2 kitchens, an infinity pool, a tennis court, and a tasting room.
