good neighbor guesthouse occupies the second floor of the good neighbor building on Falls Road in Baltimore, with the retail shop and cafe directly below it. The 7-room hotel was designed by Shawn Chopra, co-founder of good neighbor, with the aim of making each room feel more like a distinct domestic space than a hotel room. The integration between the guesthouse and the shop below is literal as well as conceptual: guests move through the same building that houses the retail operation, and the objects and furnishings throughout the guesthouse are consistent with the store's design sensibility.
Chopra drew on 3 points of reference in developing the material and spatial language of the rooms: Baltimore, Egypt, and India. His early exposure to Chandigarh, designed by Le Corbusier, shaped a lasting interest in considered, inclusive design. The rooms are built out by Baltimore artisans using local materials, keeping production close to the building's context while reflecting a broader set of influences.
Each room includes oak bed frames, reclaimed timber floors sourced from Brick and Board, lighting by Audo, and sound systems by Bang and Olufsen. Countertops are handcrafted, bath accessories are in birch, and linens are premium cotton. Art varies across rooms. The combination of locally made elements and carefully selected objects from recognized brands gives the rooms their specific character, neither a generic hotel interior nor a purely local one.
good neighbor was founded in 2019 by Chopra and Anne Morgan around what they describe as an immigrant culture of abundant hospitality, with the stated goal of building a community space around art, design, fashion, music, and film. The guesthouse is the residential extension of that idea.
